Evesham Methodist 3rd Award
'Spiritual':
- environmental concerns are included in some services, but especially the 'Why bother with climate change' service
- 'God in his love for us leant us this planet' is the church signature tune
- banner depicting this theme has been made and is often displayed
- regular environmental walks and retreats
- environmental issues are discussed in junior Church, and they sowed seeds for the wildlife area
- house groups have discussed environmental issues and followed courses on related subjects.
Practical:
- energy and water use is monitored monthly
- all low energy light bulbs (except rarely used spotlights)
- meetings/activities are related to the space
- windows regularly cleaned, unnecessary lights don't get switched on
- survey undertaken for the whole church on insulation and draught proofing - recommendations are being carried out
- new air vents are to be installed
- dual flush toilets, water saving taps and urinal saver
- new build criteria have been specified:
- maximum insulation
- maximum use of sun, minimum north facing windows
- possible pv panels
- possible rainwater recycling
- ethical investments made
- large recycling scheme
- fair trade church
- cycle racks installed
- wildlife area, used by children for studying wildlife
- compost enclosures for community composting scheme
Reaching out:
- information leaflets available to all on environmental issues
- information also published in magazine
- 3 books on organic principles published for use with children
- members of church involved in 'green' voluntary groups
- support organisations with global concerns
- specific links with Belize and Jamaica
- started local Fairtrade group: Evesham is now a Fair Trade Town
- active campaigning by congregation on fair trade, climate change and sustainability
